I spent 20 minutes staring at the visa application form trying to figure out what "travel itinerary" actually means.

Do they want a day-by-day schedule of museums I'll visit? A list of cities? Just my flight details? All of the above?

After submitting visa applications to 9 different countries, I've figured out exactly what embassies want to see. Let me show you the format that works.

A flight itinerary is a document showing your planned air travel - where you're flying from, where you're going, when, and with which airline.

It's not the same as:

• A flight ticket (that's proof you've paid)
• A boarding pass (you get that at check-in)
• A travel plan (that's your day-by-day activities)

What embassies actually care about:

• Entry date into their country
• Exit date from their country
• Flight details that prove you'll leave

That's it. They're not interested in what you're doing on Tuesday afternoon. They want to know you're showing up on a specific date and leaving on a specific date.

I've looked at hundreds of flight itineraries (mine and from friends who asked me to check theirs). The ones that work all have these 7 things:

1. Your Name (Matching Your Passport Exactly)

If your passport says "John Michael Smith," don't put "John M. Smith" or "J. Michael Smith."

Exact match. Middle name included if it's in your passport.

2. Booking Reference / PNR

This is the 6-character code the airline uses to identify your reservation.

Examples: ABC123, 7KPL9M, R4TJ6Y

This is what the embassy verifies if they decide to check your flight. No valid PNR = no valid itinerary.

3. Flight Numbers

Every flight has a number. Format is always: Airline code + numbers.

Examples:

• LH 454 (Lufthansa flight 454)
• BA 119 (British Airways flight 119)
• EK 234 (Emirates flight 234)

Don't make up flight numbers. Embassy staff can Google any flight number and see if it's real.

4. Departure and Arrival Cities

Full city names and airport codes.

Correct:

• New York JFK → London Heathrow LHR
• Mumbai BOM → Frankfurt FRA

Wrong:

• NYC → London (which airport?)
• Bombay → Germany (Bombay isn't used anymore, and Germany has multiple airports)

5. Dates and Times

Full date format: June 15, 2026 or 15-Jun-2026

Include departure time and arrival time for each flight.

Important: If you have connecting flights, list all of them. Don't just show your first and last flight.

6. Airline Name

Full airline name, not just the code.

Correct:

• Emirates (EK)
• Lufthansa (LH)
• Singapore Airlines (SQ)

7. Class of Travel

Economy, Business, or First.

This seems minor, but it actually matters. If you show Business class tickets but your bank statements show you earn $30,000/year, that looks suspicious.
